Setting up a Gmail Email Account

Having an email address these days is imperative to most of your daily online habits – online banking, booking an appointment, online shopping. It’s likely that most people reading this will already have an email address but for those of you still peddling the high school Hotmail account you set up, or if you had an email set up by your first internet provider and have no recollection of how they did it, these instructions will hopefully help you in setting up a new account should you need to in the future. And if you have never set up an email account then this is definitely the blog for you!

I am a big advocate of the Gmail account (not sponsored by them!) because of the simplicity of the set-up process and the fact that it links up to lots of other useful features such as YouTube, Google Plus, Google Keep, Calendar and so much more.

I will be doing step by step blogs on setting up other email accounts too . . . but for today, let’s set up a Gmail one.

  1. Simply click on this link - www.mail.google.com (it opens a new web page so you can keep my blog open as well as setting up your account)

  2. You will come to this page which is the Gmail log in page – you’ll notice that under the log in area there is a link which says ‘create account’ – this is what you want to click on.

  1. You’ll be taken to a page that asks for your personal information. You’ll need to fill this in and click the button to create your account.

  2. On the next page you will be asked to agree to a privacy statement.

  3. Once you’ve agreed you’ll go through to a nice ‘welcome page’ which is where you can check out all the cool apps you get access to with your new email account.

  4. To make sure you’re not overwhelmed though, we’ll just click straight on to the blue button marked ‘continue to Gmail’ – this will take you to your email account.

  5. There is a little introduction slide show that shows you all the features of your email account.

  6. Once you exit that introduction you’re into your account and that’s it!

From here you can either simply start sending emails and use the account as simply as that, or if you would like to get to know Gmail a bit better and would like some guidance, the set-up bar shows you what stage you’re at in the set-up process and gives you options on what you would like to do next.

This is particularly helpful if you are a first-time email account user or you haven’t set an account up in a long time.

Next time you want to access your emails simply type mail.google.com into your web browser and you’ll come to the same log in page you saw in stage 2) this time simply put your email address and password in and you’ll be taken through to your email account.

I hope this is helpful! If you have any questions do get in touch on my Facebook page and I’ll help the best I can.

Thanks for reading!
