5 Ways to Succeed with your Business Facebook Page

When you set up your Facebook page for your business it can be a very exciting time and depending on how old your company is, you can either find yourself flooded with 'likes', 'comments' and 'engagement' or you can gaze with frustration at your low 'reach' figures and wonder why you're bothering to put in all the time and effort.

First things first - if you have no idea what a Business Facebook Page is, then feel free to read my previous post which explains a bit further how a business page works which will help you identify if it's right for you.

Okay, self promotion out of the way, lets look at 5 ways that you can help your Facebook page succeed:

1) Just Keep Posting

This is more geared towards people who don't already have a very successful business, although it's generally good advice for anyone who has a Facebook business page.

It can seem really frustrating when you first start to be spending your time posting about your business whilst receiving little or no response back, but trust me, the key to success here is to just keep going. When I first started my page I asked my friends to like it, that got me about 50 likes. Then I had to start building on that number. I decided to post 3 times a week which for me is a manageable amount. Some pages can post several times a day as they may have more than one person managing the page but the most important thing to note here is that you should do whatever is manageable for you and just keep doing it. Consistency is key . . . once you have established that your page is 'here to stay' and regularly posts good content, people will start to take notice.

2) Make your page approachable

I cannot stress this point enough - if you want to simply sell products 24/7 then you need to think of a different marketing tool other than Facebook. People are so overwhelmed with advertising now, especially since adverts were introduced to Facebook that if a page simply tries to sell all the time, you'll quickly notice that you lose followers and engagement.

Having a Facebook for business page really is an opportunity for your customer to get to know you as a brand and to know the 'voice' of the business. So if you're a hairdressers and you have some free appointments, why not post a picture of all of you in the salon with fresh cups of tea and a plate of biscuits saying "we've got appointments available today - fancy a brew and a biscuit?" I guarantee even if it doesn't fill your appointment book up, it'll get more 'reach' and engagement than a standard 'sales' post.

3) Have more than one voice

The beauty of a Facebook for business page is that you can add 'admins' to the page which means that more than one person can post to the page. This may be a number of people from your marketing team if you're a large company or if you're a small company it might be all of the people in your business. By adding people as admins to your Facebook page and asking them to post as well as yourself you're ensuring that the page doesn't begin to follow a monotonous pattern or become too personal to one 'voice'.

To add admins to your Facebook page go to 'settings' and then click on 'page roles' which is about half way down the left hand side menu. There you'll be able to add the email address of the colleague you want to add to the page. n.b. they need to be using Facebook already to be added.

4) Create a customised URL

Okay so you want to make your Facebook URL nice and clean and simple so that if you use the link as a written address, it's easy for someone to type into their computer. Most Facebook for business pages will use the standard www.facebook.com/ but then will be followed by a series of numbers and/or letters to represent the page URL.

Our Facebook URL is www.facebook.com/leviartmareting which is simple, easy and says what the business is. I would recommend you use the name of your business but remember to keep it short and concise. This cannot be changed once you have done it so make sure you consider the URL you want and have it approved if necessary before doing it.

To create a custom URL you first need to have over 25 likes on your page so get building likes up and then when you're over that number follow these steps:

  1. Go to www.facebook.com/username

  2. Select “Select a Username” for your page

  3. This brings up a drop down menu, select the page you want to create the username for.

  4. If your page has the needed 25 fans it will bring up a box .

  5. Enter your desired username and click on “check availablilty”

  6. If it’s available, you will be shown some final terms – if you are happy with your choice click “confirm” or select “cancel” to try another one

  7. Once you have confirmed your username you're ready to get promoting it!

5) Get Connected

Once you have set things up, you have got your likes above 25, your admin roles confirmed and a custom URL it's time to start connecting with other pages and businesses that you like or have worked with before - it's even good to like the pages of your rivals. Spend some time sharing posts from their pages (as long as it fits with the message of your business), this will let them know you are willing to share their voice and so they may then share your posts back.

Also post onto the pages of businesses you have liked - congratulate them for an achievement or just generally give positive feedback about something they are doing.

NEVER post something negative or scathing about another company - you'll lose followers and likes hand over fist if you start down that route!

So that is it - I hope this post and my last one has given you lots of information about Facebook for business and how you can make it work for you. If you enjoyed it please do share the page with friends and family if you think it would be useful for them.

Thanks for reading!
